Privacy Policy
1. Who this is for
Our books are bought by parents and guardians. We do not knowingly collect information directly from children, and children do not create accounts or use the site. You, the parent or guardian, upload your child's photo and first name.
2. What we collect
- Your order: email address, shipping name and address, and the payment confirmation from Stripe (or the order details from Etsy). We never see or store your full card number.
- For the book: your child's first name, age, a photo of your child and, if you choose the pet escort, your pet's name and photo. For some books you may also add a second child's first name and photo, or a photo of a team uniform (we read only its colors and number). You may also write a dedication.
- Chat: if you use the Lukas helper on our site, the messages you type there.
- Early-access list: if you sign up on our home page, your email address.
- Basic site data: standard server logs.
- Visit and ad measurement (public pages only): on our home page, book pages and free-sampler pages we use Google Analytics and the Meta (Facebook) Pixel to count visits and to measure and improve our ads. They collect standard web data such as the pages viewed, your device and a cookie identifier. They are not on your private order pages, and we never send them your child's name, photo, pictures or anything about your order. If your browser sends the Global Privacy Control signal we do not load the Meta Pixel. You can also opt out in your Facebook ad settings or by blocking cookies. On the free-sampler page we also keep a simple anonymous step counter of our own (a random code that lives only while the tab is open, which step was reached, and the ad source): no cookie, no IP address, no email and nothing about your child. It is off when your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track.
3. How we use your child's photo
- Only to make your book: the photo is used to draw your child as the book's character.
- We never use your child's photo or the finished book in advertising, samples, social media or on our website, and we never sell or share it. Our public samples use a fictional child.
- The photo is sent over an encrypted connection to our AI image provider (OpenAI) to create the artwork and run safety checks. Under OpenAI's API terms, data sent through the API is not used to train its models.
- Our system checks photos and pictures for safety using automated moderation.
4. How long we keep it
- The uploaded photo is deleted 30 days after your book is ready (shipped, for a printed book), or right away if you cancel. The drawn pictures and print files are deleted then too. The finished PDF of a digital book stays in your account at mybooks.storybookhero.me so you can download it again any time, and you can ask us to delete it whenever you like.
- The drawn character is deleted 30 days after your book is ready unless you choose to save it so you can make more books later without uploading again. Three days before that date (day 27) we email you to ask whether to save it or delete it, and if we do not hear back it is deleted automatically. If you save it, we keep only the cartoon character (never the photo), email you once a year to ask whether you still want it kept, and you can delete it at any time from your order page or by emailing us.
- You can ask us to delete your photo sooner, at any time, by emailing us.
- The print files are held only until the book has shipped and are deleted with the photo.
- We keep order records (name, address, amounts) as long as needed for taxes, refunds and legal reasons.
5. Who else sees data
- Stripe (payment), Etsy (if you order there), Lulu (printing and shipping: your name and address and the print files), OpenAI (artwork and safety checks), Google (our email), and our hosting provider.
- We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
- We may disclose information if the law requires it.
6. Your choices
You may ask to see, correct or delete your information, or your child's photo, by emailing help@storybookhero.me. We will respond within 30 days. If you live in a state with privacy rights (for example California), these rights apply to you as the law provides.
7. Security
Photos are stored privately on our server and can be reached only through your private order link. Please keep that link private. No system is perfectly secure, but we limit access and delete photos promptly.
8. Changes and contact
If we change this policy we will post the new date above. Questions: help@storybookhero.me
